How to reach Dharamshala in 2026: trains, buses, flights, and the drive
Volvo from Delhi, the slow train to Kangra, a quick flight to Gaggal, or the scenic drive from Chandigarh. The real pros and cons of each, with prices.
There is no one right way to reach Dharamshala. The best option depends on how much time you have, how much you are willing to spend, and whether you want the journey itself to be part of the trip. Here is a breakdown that assumes nothing.
Kangra Airport, known to most people as Gaggal, is thirteen kilometres from Dharamshala. Flights from Delhi take seventy minutes and run daily. Tickets range from three thousand five hundred to seven thousand rupees in shoulder season and can double around long weekends. It is the fastest option by far. The catch is the runway, which is short, and flights are the first thing to get cancelled when valley fog or rain sets in from November through February. Book a refundable ticket in winter.
HRTC runs several AC Volvo services from ISBT Kashmere Gate and Majnu Ka Tila. The ride takes between eleven and thirteen hours depending on traffic through Chandigarh. Ticket is around one thousand four hundred rupees. The buses are reasonably comfortable but the hill section from Kiratpur gets winding. People prone to motion sickness should sit in the middle of the bus and take medication before Chandigarh, not after.
Many travellers take the overnight Jammu Mail or Dhauladhar Express to Pathankot Cantt, then a taxi or bus for the last ninety kilometres to Dharamshala. This is the most comfortable budget option. Reserve a 2AC berth if you can, around two thousand two hundred rupees. The drive from Pathankot is three hours and the last hour is pretty.
The slow toy train from Pathankot to Baijnath is a century-old narrow-gauge railway that runs along the Kangra Valley floor. It takes eight to ten hours. It is not practical as a transfer. It is a beautiful day out on its own, if you are staying long enough to have a day to spare.
Delhi to Dharamshala is about five hundred kilometres on the NH44 and NH503, usually eleven hours with stops. Chandigarh to Dharamshala is shorter at two hundred and fifty kilometres and roughly six hours. The drive through Una and Kangra town is scenic but the last fifty kilometres are winding and slow after dark. If you are driving your own car, start early and aim to be in Kangra before sunset.
