Ask ten people in Bir which stay has the best view and most will say Zostel Plus without pausing. It sits above the village, back from the road, on a slope that opens onto an uninterrupted spread of forested ridges, terraced fields and the Dhauladhar behind them. Reviewers use the phrase “360 degree” so often it has become the property's unofficial tagline. Whether or not that is geometrically true, the point stands: you can see a very long way from here, and on a clear October morning that is worth more than most amenities.
“Plus” is Zostel's upgraded tier, and it shows: nine rooms, glass walls that put the mountains inside the building, a leaf-shaped café, a stream-fed pond, a bouldering wall, a snooker table and a wooden tree deck everybody drifts to at sunset.
The long-stay evidence
Zostel Plus keeps turning up in the accounts of people who came to work. One reviewer had booked twenty days and extended by another week. Another, writing under the heading “Workation”, stayed long enough to note there were no wifi or electricity problems across the entire stay — which, in a Himachali village in winter, is a genuine endorsement rather than a throwaway line.
There is no formal coworking room. What there is instead is a very large common area with plenty of surfaces, the café, and the deck. Guests describe the common space as “pretty big”, which matters when six other people also have calls at eleven. If you need a door you can close, book a private room; if you are happy typing with a valley in front of you, the deck is hard to beat. As everywhere in the Kangra valley, the weak link is electricity rather than bandwidth — ask whether the router sits on an inverter before you commit to a month.
Two house rules that catch people out
It is adults-only — children are not accommodated, which keeps it markedly calmer than most hostels in Bir. And it is dry: no alcohol is permitted on the property, including in private rooms. Most guests never notice. A minority have written some genuinely irritated reviews about it, one describing the atmosphere as boarding-school. Neither rule is hidden, but neither is prominent at the point of booking, so know both going in.
Rooms, and a real winter warning
You can take a dorm — they come with reading nooks built into the bunks, a detail the reviews single out — or a private room, from basic up to deluxe with mountain views. The private rooms get repeatedly described as affordably priced for what they include, and the property scores full marks on cleanliness, security, staff and location.
The warning worth repeating: a guest who stayed in a basic room in winter found no electric kettle and no heater, and wished they had known. Bir in December and January is genuinely cold, with night temperatures near or below zero and snow lingering up at Billing into February. Confirm what heating your specific room category includes before you pay, because the categories are not equivalent.
Olive Kitchen
The in-house café is called Olive Kitchen, run by Rinku and Sachin, and it earns its keep. What comes up again and again is not gourmet ambition but homeliness — food that tastes cooked rather than assembled, and a kitchen willing to make local dishes off-menu if you ask nicely. Over a month that flexibility is the difference between eating well and being sick of the same six items by week two. Breakfast is usually included.
The catch: it is a walk
The property's greatest strength is also its main inconvenience. Being set back from the village means quiet, views and dark skies. It also means walking to reach cafés, the market and the bus stand. One reviewer puts it plainly: it is a bit far from the main area. It is not a hike, but if you plan to café-hop through Bir every evening, factor it in or budget for a scooter. If your reason for coming is to finish something stubborn, distance from the market is a feature rather than a fault.
If it's booked out
Nine rooms is not many, and they go early in October. For a comparable level of polish with more hardware — a gym, a pool and desks in the rooms — look at The Bunksters. Is Zostel Plus Bir good for working remotely?+
Yes, particularly for stays of a week or more — guests who worked from the property for two to four weeks report reliable internet and power. There is no dedicated coworking room, so you work from the large common area, the café or the tree deck.
