Here is something nobody tells you before you come to Bir: the village goes to bed early. Most kitchens take a last order somewhere between eight and nine, and if you land on an evening bus from Delhi, or come down from a late flight hungry, you can walk the whole main road and find everything dark.

Café Roam Wild is the answer to that. It runs until around one in the morning, and it does not open until midday — which tells you exactly what kind of place it is. This is Bir's night café.

More than a fallback

It would be easy to assume a late-night place coasts on being the only option in town. Roam Wild carries a 4.8, higher than anything else in this guide, so clearly not.

The word that dominates its reviews is ambience, which is a remarkable thing for a small room a couple of minutes from the landing site. In practice that means good music, warm wooden interiors, low light, and the specific thing that happens in cafés like this at eleven at night in a traveller town: tables start talking to each other. People describe walking in alone and leaving with plans for the next day.

What to order

The hot chocolate is the single most praised item, and it is the thing to get if you have come in cold off a scooter — ask for the hot cocoa version if you want it richer, or the hot cocoa brownie if you want both at once.

Momos are the food order. The dip that comes with them has an unreasonable number of fans; more than one reviewer calls it the best momo dip they have had anywhere, which for a country with strong opinions about momo chutney is saying something. There is a beetroot dimsum that sounds like a gimmick and is not.

Beyond that: pizza, including a farmhouse and a peri-peri garlic chicken, garlic bread, peri peri fries, chicken popcorn, thukpa and brownies. On the drinks side there is a jamun iced tea and a Lotus Biscoff shake that both come up regularly.

The two underrated things

First, delivery. Roam Wild delivers, including late at night, and reviewers who have used it repeatedly describe them as quick and reliable with sensible packaging. If you are staying somewhere without a kitchen and it is raining — which in Bir between July and September it frequently is — this is worth saving in your phone before you need it. Second, dogs. It is openly pet friendly and runs an actual pet menu, which is rare anywhere and rarer in a village where half the long-stay crowd has adopted something.

The honest note

It is small and it gets full. The most common criticism in the reviews is simply that you may wait, particularly on a weekend evening when it is the only lit room on the street. There is no way around that — it is the trade-off for the atmosphere. Go a little earlier, around eight or nine, if you would rather not queue. The owners reply to essentially every review, thanking people by name.

If it's closed, or full

After nine at night your options in Bir are thin but not zero. Himalayan Pizza on the Bir Colony road runs to about 11 pm, Big Daddy's Shawarma in Chaugan to about 11, and Woe Sang and Tenzin Jamdol in the Tibetan colony to about half ten — all seven days a week. Before nine, The Northern Cafe serves until 9.30 and Café Buransh until 9. Everything else in this guide is shut by half eight.
