Some cafés earn a reputation for one thing and then live on it forever. Charlie's earned its reputation for a sunset, and unusually, it is also worth eating at.

It is on Landing Road right at the Bir landing field — you will walk past it on your way out from a flight without meaning to. It is women-owned, built across three levels, and the roof is the point. A third of everyone who reviews the place writes about the same thing: the sunset, and the gliders coming down in front of it. The rooftop view runs almost the full circle, over the landing field on one side and the rice paddies on the other.

Order the burgers

Burgers are what the kitchen does best — more mentions than anything else on the menu — and they are substantial rather than styled. After that, the Nutella and banana crepes are the sweet order, the white sauce pasta is reliable, and the hot chocolate gets consistent praise.

The coffee is better than it needs to be for a café with this view; one heavily-travelled reviewer called it the reason to come rather than a side note. The masala chai is the standard afternoon order, and the ginger-lemon-honey is what people swear by when the evening turns cold.

Three levels, and which one to pick

Indoor, outdoor and rooftop. Take the roof if there is space and you do not mind sun; take the outdoor terrace in the middle of the day; take the indoor room when the wind picks up, which it does here in the late afternoon.

The staff get named in reviews, which is unusual and telling — Sahil on the front desk comes up repeatedly — and the general verdict is that this is a polite, easy, well-run little place.

The honest note

Two recurring complaints, and you should hear them from us. Prices sit above the cafés further from the landing field, and portions can be mean relative to that price — one review with a photo of a very small plate of fries went viral in its own small way, and the owner replied to it at length and with some spirit. And one visitor was charged above MRP for a bottle of water, which is worth knowing so you can check.

Neither is a reason not to go. They are a reason to order a main rather than filling up on sides, and to look at the bill.

Timing

Open 9.30 am to 8.30 pm every day. So it is open for breakfast — genuinely good for it, if you want to eat opposite the landing site before the day's flights start — and open late enough for an early dinner. You will see split weekday and weekend hours quoted elsewhere; the current listings show the same times seven days a week.

The window that matters is the hour before sunset. Go up thirty minutes early, order a drink, and hold the table.

If it's closed, or full

It does not close, but the roof fills before sunset and there is no booking. Café Buransh is a minute away on the other side of the field, cheaper, with its own terrace and much better Himachali food. If you want the widest valley view instead of the closest one, The Northern Cafe is ten minutes uphill — bigger view, weaker kitchen. And after half eight, when Charlie's shuts, Café Roam Wild is the only room in Bir still lit.
